Backto School: Mom’s Edition

Today I’m on tour with a different kind of Back to School post.  This time it’s the Mom addition!

With the kids in school, some of us lucky moms find ourselves with a little more selfish sewing time and I’m planning to take full advantage.  I started with two Piko Tops from EYMM (*affiliate link).

The first Piko I made is with this  knit that I purchased from Imagine Gnats last spring.  It’s thicker than I’d normally use for this style of top, but I have a lot of it so I figured it could be a wearable muslin.

I made a size L even though my hips and bust are closer to the XL size knowing that the finished measurement chart more closely matched the L for how I’d like this top to fit.  I don’t love to wear large flowy tops as they tend to tent out on my shape with a large bust and hip, so I normally will use my upper bust measurement to pick the size which is closer to a M.  L helped to split the difference.

I still felt the L was bigger than I would like AND the 3/4 sleeve didn’t work for me so with this thinner knit I shot for a M with a long sleeve.  This is MUCH closer to a fit I am comfortable with and I will make more using the M for sure.

There’s still plenty of room for the piko style, but the snug long sleeve and tighter neckline make me feel more balanced and much less tent-like.

With sizing from XS to 5X you can definitely find the size that’s right for you with this Piko Top (*affiliate link).  And the best part about it is how quickly it sews together!  With the second version I dropped my girl at kindergarten at 8:50am, was home and cutting the pattern out in the M size by 9am, sewed it together immediately, and was done and wearing it at a scheduled meeting by 10am.  That alone is worth the price of admission, right?

I've always loved making. At an early age I started cross stitching and sewing and I taught myself to knit and crochet during college. When our seven year old daughter Bean was born I was filled with all sorts of inspiration, so now I find ways to manage my crafty time and treasure those moments. Though sewing is what I'm most passionate about these days, there's something about the portability of yarn crafts and embroidery that keeps drawing me back in.
